General Commission

 

This committee is commissioned by the Chancellor and is responsible to the Chancellor and the appropriate delegated staff to advise on ways to enhance educational opportunities for African-American students and to assist the campus in recruitment, retention and improvement of campus life for such students.

 

Appointments and Composition

The Chancellor shall initially appoint a chairperson and fifteen additional members of this committee from alumni and constituent related volunteer organizations. Two student representatives shall also be appointed annually to provide appropriate input. Representatives from the following campus offices will be appointed by the Chancellor to serve as resource persons to the committee--admissions, alumni, minority engineering and student life.


The fifteen members shall be appointed on a staggered basis to three year terms ending on June 30th. Initially, five members will be appointed to a term ending June 30, 1987, five members to a term ending June 30, 1988 and five members to a term ending June 30, 1989. All members may be selected to serve a second three year term.


Staff members will be appointed on an annual basis. The chairperson shall be selected annually by the Chancellor.


Nominees for replacement members on the committee may be forwarded to the Chancellor for consideration from members of the committee, faculty, students or staff of the University.


Guidelines for operation of the committee shall be left to the committee, but advising recommendations to be directed to the Chancellor shall be in writing with majority and minority opinion (where appropriate) so designated.


There shall be no less than two nor more than four meetings of this committee each year.

 

Responsibilities

Study and evaluate current programs for recruitment and retention of African-American students.


Assist in recruiting qualified African-American students by working with the campus admissions office.


Provide financial and counseling support in efforts to retain such students by working with the minority engineering and student life offices.


Aid the campus with appropriate recommendations to improve the environment for African-American students.


Promote and develop appropriate student social and professional organizations to complement academic experiences for students.


Assist the campus in acquiring financial resources (public and private) to improve the educational and quality of life on campus.


Recruit appropriate volunteer leadership from the African- American alumni and constituent community to fulfill the responsibilities as outlined above.
