Mr. Bates is a registered civil engineer in 8 states and practices engineering in the field of water/water pollution control. He is president of KHAFRA Engineering Consultants, Inc. in Atlanta, GA and has served in that capacity for 17 years.
Personal Narrative:
Mr. Bates, a native of Shreveport, LA, grew up in the construction industry. He holds BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering. On May 1, 1986, he opened KHAFRA Enginering Consultants, Inc. (KHAFRA), a professional design and planning services firm. Since the inception, KHAFRA has grown from a staff of 5 to a staf of over 140. Headquarters is located in Atlanta, GA with additional offices in Augusta, GA; Birmingham, AL; Louisville, KY and Chattanooga,TN. Mr. Bates is a registered professional engineer in Georgia, Louisiana, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.
His career spans 25 years. Mr. Bates belongs to numerous professional affiliations, including Chi Epsilon, Tau Beta Pi, Order of the Engineer, Water Environment Federation, National Technical Association, American Public Works Association, American Water Works Association and the Consulting Engineers Council. In 2001, he was inducted into the Missouri-Rolla Academy of Civil Engineers where he serves as Vice President. In 2002, he was inducted into the Order of the Golden Shellaigh. In 2000 KHAFRA was awarded the Minority Firm of the year by the Southeastern Region of the Small Business Adminstration. His civic duties included Leadership Cobb County, Cobb County Plumbing Advisory Board, Substate C Chairman of the Metropolitan Atlanta Private Industry Council, Secretary of the Cobb County Police Athletic League, Fulton County Beat the Odds, Georgia Black Chamber of Commerce, the 100 Black Women Gourmet Gents and the Benefactors of Education.
Mr. Bates is an active board member of the University of Missouri-Rolla African American Recruitment and Retention Committee and the Southwestern Christian College Board of Directors. He is a member of the Simpson Street Church of Christ where he has chaired the Building Committee.
